He was about 7-8 yrs young. Since he was originally picked up as a stray, we will never be sure of his age. Adopted from a shelter, he evidently lived with a family for a few years, was given to their friend .. stayed in that home for an unknown period of time ... was given back to the other people .. stayed there for another unknown period of time until they decided they really didn't want him any longer. A neighbor contacted us when she saw him being left outside by himself during a particularly snowy winter. It is possible that he was abused physically. He was definitely abused emotionally/psychologically. When he first came to foster care, he'd run in the opposite direction when called by name. This is usually a strong indication that he associated "coming when called" to being hit or yelled at. We worked on that by giving him LOTS of praise, petting and/or treats so that he would associate his name [and coming over to you when hearing his name] with something GOOD. Hamlet was very playful ... loved toys of all kinds, laser lights, and games of tag. He had great doggie language skills and gave appropriate calming or play signals as needed. He taught Sashi how to play tug with the rope and also tag/tussle/wrestle.
He had a rather unique and endearing habit. Hamlet preferred to spend his time in the bathroom because of the nice, cool tile ~ and probably because it was quiet. He'd disappear for hours in the powder room, all curled up behind the toilet [no small feat considering his plumpness at the time]. He'd also make a bee-line for the upstairs hall bath, go inside, CLOSE THE DOOR with his nose so he could have some "alone time". The first time this happened, his foster mom thought she had accidently closed the door, not realizing he was there. NOPE ~ he did it all by himself on purpose many times during his stay! Too funny !!
Week of July 4th, he was adopted by a wonderful couple in Toms River, NJ. They had a little store with lots of fun/unique gifts and Sammie became the designated store manager and customer service rep. He'd evidently follow folks around, lie next to them as they decided on their purchases, accompany them to the cash register ..... what a wonderful new life for this special boy.
