Ginger came to NJ Sheltie Rescue in July 2008. She had experienced quite a bit of turmoil during her 7 to 8 years.....
As a puppy, she was originally given to a man who never should have owned a pet ..... he abused her ~ and she ran away. Evidently she was "found" about a year later when hit by a car. We assume she was treated at a local shelter ~ she didn't go back to the 1st owner, but was [adopted from shelter?] given to a woman as a Christmas present.
This 2nd owner loved Ginger & did the best she could, but was unable to afford the vet care needed to deal with Ginger's ongoing ear and skin infections. By the time she was turned over to sheltie rescue, her ears had become "cauliflowered" by recurrent infections and her skin was "angry looking" with all the breakouts and lesions, hardened in some spots, scabbed in others ..... even her mouth/lips were infected. Poor Ginger was hard to behold !! You could only imagine how much she suffered.

She went to foster with our most experienced sheltie people, Donna and Greg. Looking beyond all of this, Donna could see that Ginger was a pretty sable merle ~ probably from a reputable breeder.
With all the discomfort she must have felt, Ginger was sweet, very easy to be around, liked dogs & cats, and people. Vet exam & blood tests revealed that on top of the skin/ear infections she also has very high Lyme disease count, pain in both elbows so she couldn't extend her legs properly, and pain in both hips [most likely from Lyme disease]. She was put on antibiotics and special shampoos/skin treatments.

The following pictures of Ginger were taken during the week before and day of her adoption ~ look at the amazing difference in her coat & ears !!! Donna & Greg did an incredible job !!!
