Fuji's Story
adopted ~ October 2006

Fuji came from Burlington County Animal Shelter and was so severely matted that she had stopped eating because she couldn't relieve herself properly. She was also soaked in urine. Not sure how she came to be at a the shelter ~ stray? owner turn-in? We guessed her age at 10-12 yrs.

| She was one of the toughest cases Gretchen and her husband, Charles had dealt with in their 10+ yrs of rescue. When questioned on why he had picked Fuji up from the shelter, Charles said that he saw a spark there ~ and a will to live. Her entire coat had to be shaved off ......her skin was so red and irritated from all of the mats pulling on it. Once shaved, she ran with joy and began to eat. And eat. And eat. Her "first life" must have been incredibly tramatic and more severe than anyone could have imagined.

It was going to take someone very special to complete her. She was a pretty tough foster ~ temperamental & inclined to be nippy ~ Gretchen has the scars on her arm to prove it.
The moment Fuji met Trevor, she *knew* that he was the one!!! Rolled over, wiggled all over .... something she had never done for her foster parents.
She was extremely happy with her life and "her person". Trevor wrote that she was so full of life, and such a fast runner, even at her advanced age she could *almost* catch a squirrel [they were always just a little shiftier than she was]. She loved being outdoors, going for walks twice daily with "dad".

Gretchen received an e-mail from Trevor ~ news that Fuji had taken her last walk & was now at the Rainbow Bridge.
I just thought I'd let you know that she died today.
She pretty much stopped eating about 1 1/2 weeks ago, and the vet
discovered through a blood test that her kidneys were failing.
She was a happy dog though, right until the end. In fact, we went for a nice walk today,
and she dragged me along as usual! This evening, her breathing became very labored,
and she died a short while later. I was with her.
Her age was probably somewhere between 12 and 14, but she had the energy and
spirit of a much younger dog. I'm so sad that I couldn't be with her for longer,
but I'm thankful that I could share 2 years with her. She was a very special dog,
and I'll miss her terribly.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to adopt her. I hope you're doing
well.
