Damian's family had been working with him to overcome of his excessive barking ~ a problem that was causing complaints from the neighbors ~ and his other sheltie quirks [intense herding/chasing instinct].
They were making tremendous progress ~ no more complaints from the neighbors. Time, patience, love, hard work ~ all had paid off. He had become the dog they knew he could be ~ a part of the family & their best friend.
The family had to be out of town for several days and arrangements were made for their 3 shelties to stay at a friend's house. Later in the weekend, they received a call that Damian had run out when the front door opened and could not be found. His family raced back home and searched all night to no avail. The following day they continued their search in the area where he was last seen.
Damian was found by the roadside ~ he'd been hit by a car. The driver apparently never stopped, certainly didn't bother to help or let anyone know. His family is heartbroken ~ so unfair when things had turned around and were working out for everyone.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Damian's family.
** no matter how well trained your sheltie ~ please never forget ......
There's the possibility that s/he will slip out of the house in a moment of lapsed obedience/attention ~ perhaps to chase a squirrel, or check out the dog/neighbor across the street ~ or a moment's impish desire to play 'catch me if you can'. Be ever so careful when opening front/back doors or fence gates ~ you just never know .....
