Catalina ~ AKA "LINA"

I did change her name to Lina instead of Cat, so she's still officially Catalina, just using a different part of her name.
She and Rex are getting along very well. Judging from the nose prints on the window I suspect they spend a lot of the day watching what's going on outside, and then the rest of the time they spend snoozing on the couch.
Rex has turned Lina into something of an early bird. When he gets up and I am not ready to do the same, he will wake her up and then they start to play. Lina likes barking when she's playing, so then it's time for me to get up too.
First thing in the morning is when Rex is at his liveliest, so that's when he likes to try to herd her somewhere, or race around her or just bark at her. She will either play with him or bark at him that it's enough. She's very easy going so she tolerates a lot of his sometimes very bratty behavior.
Both Lina and Rex love their walks, but I have to walk them separately because Rex has difficulty focusing when his buddy is along. Lina will protest loudly until we come back. She hates to be left out of anything and will follow me everywhere. She does have a favorite spot, which is a closet that has some blankets on the floor.
And as for Rex, I think he's much more relaxed when I come home and I never find anything chewed anymore. He is doing very well, he's healthy and active, and for the most part very well behaved. He still has moments where he acts like a complete goofball, which makes me laugh.
The vet found Lina has stage 2 kidney disease, so she needs a special low protein diet which is not too difficult to manage because Rex needs his own special low protein diet. We'll keep an eye on that, but aside from that she seems in really good shape. I think when you have them on a good diet and they get the proper exercise they do well. I'll have to find out more about that. I think it's not uncommon among older dogs.

** Helen adopted Zippy in 2004 [now at the Rainbow Bridge] and little Rex in 2008.
Yep, I was lucky enough to be the one to adopt Catalina. She really is very sweet.
Lina is as she was described, a 'go with the flow' kind of dog. She will get up as early or as late as you do, she goes to bed as early or as late as you do, and she plays or sits by your feet as you like. She loves to look out the window or sit on the porch and watch everyone or anything go by. I now have 2 levels of nose prints on the porch door, Rex's level and now Lina's level. Her absolute favorite thing is going for walks, and when you see her, you would not believe she is 12 or 13. She's got the same bounce to her walk that Rex, a 2yr old has.
Lina is also great with Rex. He has moments during the day where he is just exploding with energy and will jump on her, try to grab her feet, chase around her or whatever else comes into his head. When it gets too much for her, she just barks at him once and he behaves himself again. The only thing she doesn't like is when I walk Rex and leave her behind. She will bark until we get back. I would take her, but after a few minutes Rex becomes a nuisance and tries to play with her and then it becomes a little awkward walking the two of them. I will have to ask Rex's trainer about that.
As for Rex, well, the first few days he was nervous and unhappy about it, but he's warming up to her and tries to invite her to play. I think he still doesn't like that she sleeps on the bed with him, but as long as he can sleep right next to me he's ok.
There are 2 things I noticed she doesn't like. One is being brushed, but the only way you can tell is that you can feel her shaking a little bit when you brush her. Otherwise she lays quietly until you are done. I do a little bit every day because right now it's easy, and the comb just slides right through her hair, which, by the way, is really beautiful and soft. Then she gets a little bit of cheese when we're done. It makes a nice change from Rex who has no patience to sit still enough to be brushed.
The other thing she doesn't like is the vacuum cleaner, and the only way you can tell that is that she will walk out of the room to lay down in a corner of another room.
I've been really lucky with my 3 rescues. They were/are nice, loyal and affectionate little dogs that have/are a pleasure to own.

6/21/2009 update: Catalina [CAT] has been adopted :)
We are hoping to get pictures from her new mom !!!!
Cat, as we like to call her, is a small very, very sweet tri-colored female, between 12 and 13 years young, about 23 lb.
She came into rescue because her previous owner moved out West, and the owner's son was unable to give her the time he felt she needed due to his job/hours out of the house. Cat loves attention, is extremely friendly to everyone (including strangers), and is good with most dogs. We think she will be fine with cats as she is a "go with the flow" kind of dog.
If you do not have a fenced yard, Cat will walk very nicely on a leash. She is up to date on shots, had a dental, and a benign tumor removed, so she is just waiting for her "new" home.
