Sent: Sun, Jul 26, 2009 .... Pup-Date "Noelle's new toy"
Hi Linda,
It is official - her name is now Noelle. Was hoping to send some pictures my daughter took yesterday but she is having trouble sending them to me - when I get them I will forward them to you.
Thought you might like to hear this story. I have a treadmill which I use to help my breathing. Didn't use it for awhile after bringing Noelle home. The first time I went to use it was Friday night. I started it low not knowing if it would scare her or what. Well she came over and watched for a short bit and then left and came back with a tigger toy (a tigger face with a rope handle- the tigger face is probably 5 or 6 inches across). She held it a bit and then proceeded to put the toy on the treadmill in FRONT of my feet. I couldn't believe it. After this went on for a number of times and I was able to miss stepping on the toy and not falling I decided it best to STOP.
Told my daughter and Pamela about it. My daughter, Chris (speaking of Christmas names hers was Christine Carol Noel (she HATED IT), thought it funny and suggested I turn the treadmill on without being on it and letting Noelle play be herself. Pamela I don't think really believed me. Well this afternoon Pamela came over and after playing for awhile I said now watch this and got on the treadmill. Noelle just brought a tennis ball toy but kept putting it in front, to the side, going after it as it went off the treadmill. We were laughing so hard. Pamela said it must be just me so she got on the treadmill and low and behold Noelle started to put the toys around her feet.
The decision now is Noelle must be in another room while I use the treadmill if I can't train her to put the toy always BEHIND me.
So Linda - the energizer bunny is still running strong.
She is behaving with the cats - no more trouble. She is only crated when I go to work - she sleeps by the bed or in a cat bed at night - sometimes she will go into the crate and lie down and sleep. It is there if she wants it. When I leave the house I put her upstairs in my bedroom (less for her to get into trouble with) and she has been wonderful. I plan on keeping extending the time away until I feel really comfortable for a work day. This little girl learns quite quickly.

Hi ~ my name is Candy and I'm about 8-10 years young. Some nice people found me wandering all by myself and took me to a "shelter" hoping that my family would find me, but after 7 days, no one had come :(
So on Friday, July 3rd I went to live with a foster mom. Everyone who has met me says I'm sweet, quiet, and soooo cute. I LOVE to play fetch & will bring back [whatever toys you have] for you to throw again. Sometimes I even 'toss the toy back at you' .... yes, I'm just the most adorable sheltie you'd ever want to meet !!! I like rummaging through the toy box and testing all the different size/textures of balls and all the different stuffed toys .... haven't found a toy I didn't like

Pictures below are posted for future reference ~
Little Miss Candy had some serious skin issues when she was found as a stray. Not sure how much was related to the flea infestation [apparently she was covered from head to toe to tail]. Could be part hypothyroidism, part being on the street/wandering and eating who knows what, or allergies.
Appropriate blood tests have to wait until we clear up the Kennel Cough, ear and eye infections. Taking one problem at a time.
She'll be wearing T-shirts for awhile to protect her skin from the constant scratching/biting.

 |
| this is a bit blurry, but NO dog should have ears this red or filled with yeasty discharge |

 |
| Candy's back ~ note loss of hair and odd skin pigmentation |
|
|
 |
| Candy's chest ~ scraped raw by her nails/biting at her itchy skin. It was very distressing to see her in this condition. The doctor, vet techs and foster mom couldn't imagine how much she was suffering .. and for how long !!! |
|
|
 |
| Candy's tail ~ referred to as a "Rat Tail" when it has this much hair loss |

 |
| the sun washed out picture / but there were bloody scrape marks along her side ~ you could see all 4 nail marks from her constant scratching. the flakiness is from seborrhea-like lesions |

 |
| what little fur she did have on flanks & "sheltie skirt" was matted to the skin & had to be carefully clipped away before she was bathed |

| Age: |
8 to 10 ? |
| Sex: |
female / spayed |
| Color & Size: |
sable, small ~ about 20 lbs |
| Status: |
intervewing a potential mommy on July 18th [keeping paws crossed she'll like me] |
| |
| Health: |
flea allergies identified by vet at shelter; treated [also treated for K.Cough, ear & eye infection]. Will need 6 weeks on antibiotics for systemic yeast infection, as well as daily ear cleaning [very easy ~ she's such a good girl]. Might take 4-5 months for full coat to grow back in. Using food additives from Nature's Farmacy to build back her 'good bacteria/flora' that's needed in the digestive track.
Not done yet ~ but should be done in next month or so: thyroid panel [might have hypothyroidism / inexpensive medication], as well as senior blood panel for general health check. Teeth could stand to be cleaned, but not so bad that you notice her breath. |
