Bentley
My husband and I moved to North Plainfield, NJ in the summer of 1999 with our then two dogs, Meisha (border collie mix) and Indy (our first rescue Sheltie).
We lost Meisha that fall (she was 17 years old). We decided that we liked two dogs around the house, so we decided to adopt another dog. Since I had fallen in love with the Sheltie breed, I was hoping to get another Sheltie. To my delight I found Aneita and SSPSNJ located not far from my home. When I contacted her, she recommended the 1 year old Bentley. I went to see Bentley at Aneita's and it was love at first sight. I adopted him that day and he came home with Indy and me.
His backstory was that he was voluntarily given up by his previous owner who worked up to 14 hours a day and Bentley was crated that whole time. To this day Bentley doesn't like being confined in small spaces and has separation anxiety, but other than that he didn't have too much other baggage. He quickly moved into our home and hearts and joined Indy as part
of our family.
We lost our Indy in the fall of 2002. He became painfully paralyzed (he was only 11 years old). We had to help him over the Rainbow Bridge knowing that he would pain free and able to run again. This was very traumatic for myself and my husband. Bentley became such a comfort and was very sensitive to our emotions. He was my constant companion during this emotionally trying time. Since that time he is very attuned to my emotions, especially when I'm sad. He will insist on licking my face to dry my tears, in his doggie way providing the much needed comfort and support. He is a very special boy, my Bentley.

Kayla:
After about a year of Bentley being our only "child", my husband and I decided we wanted to go back to being a two dog family. Again, we wanted another Sheltie, but we were concerned about Bentley's boyness (he's fixed but very much a boy dog).
We contacted Aneita looking for a youngish female Sheltie. She didn't have any at the time, but recommended Patchwork Shelties in Pennsylvania. We contacted Kathy and found out that she had a female Sheltie, Katie, available for adoption. It seemed to be fate that brought Kayla to us since we had chosen her name before we started to look for another dog and here we are with Katie. Her name change was very easy and worked well for her.
Her story was that she was given up because she wouldn't go out in the rain and since her previous owners were older this became difficult. We adopted her the day we went to see her, brought her home and realized that we had a "perfect" dog. No baggage at all. In fact so loving that we can't see why she was given up. We call her the love sponge, she is so sweet.
Kayla moved into our house and into our hearts and proceeded to assert her female dog rights, she bosses us all for hugs, kisses and tickles. Bentley is such a gentleman that he defers to her in most things and also loves his Kayla.
Both our Shelties live happily with us, they have a big fenced back yard to romp in. Kayla loves keeping the squirrels on their toes. Our two are also great watchdogs, alerting us to anything out of the ordinary happening around our house. To me, nothing is better than sharing our house with our two Shelties.
